Che cosa mi ha lasciato The Good Wife

Parlare di The Good Wife è come parlare della propria vita a una persona che non hai mai visto. È difficile perché è qualcosa di talmente ricco e sostanzioso che sai già che ti dimenticherai qualcosa, e anche perché essere oggettivi riguardo alla propria vita è impossibile: la nostra visione del mondo e della realtà è ciò che guida il nostro comportamento, le nostre credenze, i nostri atteggiamenti e le nostre opinioni, e non sempre questa visione è consapevole ed esplicita, la maggior parte delle volte è inconscia ed è qualcosa che non sappiamo spiegare a parole.

Con The Good Wife è così perché The Good Wife è innanzitutto i suoi personaggi, che a me piace definire "straordinariamente ordinari". Nonostante lo status di quasi tutti i personaggi sia piuttosto alto (parliamo di avvocati di successo, giudici, politici e i migliori investigatori possibili), quello che vive il personaggio è sempre una storia credibile, sono sempre situazioni ordinarie e assolutamente reali, ed è in questo modo che lo spettatore è portato ad empatizzare e, in casi a mio avviso non rari, ad identificarsi. Credo che ognuno di noi si sia identificato con i personaggi almeno una volta nel corso del telefilm. Per dirne una, io, che sono sempre stata fan di Alicia, nell'ultimo episodio ho empatizzato tantissimo con Diane e ho quasi goduto a vedere quello schiaffo finale. Ogni scelta fatta dal personaggio, ogni parola detta risulta lo specchio di quello che faremmo noi che stiamo guardando, come se fossero frutto della nostra soggettività, e così diventa impossibile guardare e parlare di The Good Wife in modo assolutamente oggettivo. Non solo i personaggi principali sono così ricchi di sfaccettature che sembra quasi di poterli toccare con mano, ma anche i personaggi secondari sono personaggi emblematici, forse un po' meno credibili ma allo stesso tempo ricchi di sfaccettature e con personalità precise: penso ad esempio a Louis Cunning, a Lemond Bishops, al Judge Abernathy e ad Elsbeth Tascioni, tutti personaggi che sebbene non fossero presenti in ogni episodio hanno saputo arricchire ancora la serie nella sua interezza, rendendo il contesto sempre meglio delineato e la storia ancora più credibile.

The Good Wife è stato capace di far passare attraverso i suoi personaggi una serie di storie e di idee che a mio avviso non potevano essere sviluppate meglio. Un legal drama fornisce agli autori un modo per parlare di questioni sociali ancora molto discusse, come la pena di morte, l'aborto, l'eutanasia, lo stupro: il problema è che quando si affrontano questi problemi è un attimo a cadere nei luoghi comuni e nei cliché. Robert e Michelle King sono riusciti a filtrare questi dilemmi attraverso gli occhi dei loro personaggi, restituendo allo spettatore un'opinione con un'eleganza fuori dal comune. È come se i King ci volessero dire "Toh, questo è il dilemma, e questa è la legge, questo è quello che ne pensa Diane, e questo è quello che prova chi ne è vittima, fanne quel che vuoi, ma riflettici". Non sono un'esperta di sceneggiatura, ma mi è sempre parso che gli episodi a tema dilemmi sociali fossero i migliori, quelli con i dialoghi più illuminanti e che lasciano allo spettatore un senso di angoscia e di impotenza di fronte all'incapacità di trovare una risposta che vada bene a tutti.

Una questione a parte merita il discorso del femminismo. Che The Good Wife sia una serie femminista, credo si capisca già dal pilot. Ma quello che è davvero femminista è il modo di affrontare alcune questioni senza che lo spettatore se ne accorga. Allo spettatore sembrerà quasi naturale che Diane Lockhart sia un socio nominale di uno dei migliori studi legali di Chicago, perché Diane Lockhart sa il fatto suo, è brava, per non dire una delle migliori, in quello che fa. Così come lo spettatore non si chiederà perché Alicia, pur essendo donna, riesca ad essere più spietata e badass ogni episodio che passa: perché le situazioni in cui si è trovata l'hanno portata a diventare così. Il femminismo di The Good Wife è, per usare un termine stra-abusato (mi perdoni Bauman), un femminismo liquido, che non ti parla in modo esplicito di uguaglianza tra uomo e donna: The Good Wife l'uguaglianza te la mostra, mai agendo per stereotipi o per luoghi comuni, sempre facendo passare tutto attraverso le storie dei personaggi. The Good Wife se ne frega degli stereotipi di genere, li calpesta e se li lascia alle spalle con classe, facendo quello che nessun altro (a mia memoria) è stato in grado di fare: perpetua il femminismo facendolo passare per una cosa naturale, mai messo in dubbio, mai discusso. Alicia, alla fine della serie, cammina da sola dopo aver perso Jason, Diane e anche Peter: è una donna indipendente e che ha imparato a soffrire, a fatica si rialzerà di nuovo (il mettersi a posto i capelli, accarezzarsi un po' la guancia dolorante, sistemare la giacca e girarsi un po' traballante sui tacchi è davvero un'immagine bellissima e credo sia il sunto di tutta la serie) e camminerà, da sola, perché Alicia è diventata una donna indipendente.
Ma d'altro canto The Good Wife è stronzo dentro e ti mette davanti anche a un'altra realtà: quella della folla che ancora ha bisogno di aggrapparsi a questi stereotipi, perché in un certo senso ci forniscono certezze. Alicia, come le viene costantemente richiesto in tutte le stagioni, nonostante abbia ormai chiuso con Peter, rimane sempre al suo fianco "per immagine". Lei non ama Peter, ma non si tira indietro quando deve stare al suo fianco per la campagna elettorale o per far vedere che lei è una brava moglie. Emblematico a questo proposito è il dialogo tra Ruth ed Eli, quando quest'ultimo spiega che Peter non ha avuto successo al Caucus di Iowa perché Alicia non è stata valorizzata a dovere: gli elettori devono vedere Saint Alicia e come Saint Alicia stia sempre al fianco del marito, perché l'immagine della buona moglie è un'euristica ancora troppo forte a cui tanta gente si appiglia.
A mio avviso, anche in questo The Good Wife è stato capace di restituire un'immagine complessa e dettagliata del mondo in cui viviamo, senza mai assumere un'opinione come l'unica possibile ma riuscendo a scoprire tutte le carte in tavola e dire "ecco, questo è quello su cui dobbiamo riflettere".

Dal punto di vista strettamente psicologico ho apprezzato moltissimo la risoluzione del fattore Will: da quel drammatico episodio (che non a caso si intitolava Dramatics, Your Honor) in poi abbiamo un'Alicia che attraversa tutte le fasi del lutto. Gli episodi successivi a quello sono assolutamente perfetti e Mind's Eye è uno degli episodi che ho apprezzato di più in tutta la serie (e non solo per la colonna sonora): Alicia che si ferma un attimo dalla sua vita e riflette. Non c'è il nasone di Josh Charles, ma siamo stati tutti in grado di capire che quella controfigura fosse proprio Will Gardner. Non so se sia stato voluto o non voluto, sta di fatto che si dà davvero un'idea che Alicia non sia ancora riuscita a superare del tutto Will, che stia provando a dimenticarlo per evitare di soffrire. Ma, il vecchio zio Freud lo diceva, e dopo di lui tutta una serie di psicoanalisti e di psicologi, il lutto si supera solo con l'interiorizzazione della persona perduta. Nell'ultimo episodio compare di nuovo Will, ed è una proiezione della mente di Alicia: ha finalmente capito che dimenticare non è possibile, e che Will vive in lei, non solo in senso strettamente romantico (quell'I'll love you for ever è stato veramente un colpo al cuore e allo stesso tempo un sollievo), ma anche da un punto di vista personale. Non è tanto Will in sé, ma tutto quello che le ha lasciato: la capacità di gestire casi professionali difficili, la capacità di pensare alla vita con gli occhi dell'uomo che ha sempre amato e di analizzare le situazioni anche da un punto di vista diverso dal proprio, ma soprattutto la consapevolezza che non troverà mai nessuno come Will (e forse è anche per questo che alla fine lascia andare Jason senza lottare più di tanto ma girando le spalle e tornando sui propri passi).

Il finale mi sembra una chiusura non perfetta del cerchio: non so se questo sia voluto, ma io l'ho apprezzato. Per esempio, mentre le situazioni di Cary e Jason ci risultano abbastanza chiare, non sappiamo come andrà avanti la storia di Lucca, o di Alicia e di Diane: il colpo basso di Alicia avrà messo in pericolo lo studio di sole donne che erano riuscite a costruire? Di colpi bassi ce ne sono stati e tutti, bene o male, si sono risolti, e credo che questo non possa e non debba essere il definitivo. A caldo è normale che Diane si sia comportata così, ma non ci è dato sapere come andranno avanti le cose. Non sappiamo come verrà gestita dai media e dal pubblico la fuga di Alicia dalle telecamere dopo che Peter ha annunciato la fine della carriera.
Con cerchio non perfetto intendo dire che sì, la prima scena del pilot e l'ultima scena dell'ultimo episodio coincidono, ma nonostante la ripetizione di immagini come lo schiaffo, tutto quello che è stato costruito in questi sette anni non può ridursi a questo "re-beginning". Ho apprezzato questo finale un po' in bilico perché in un certo senso restituisce a noi spettatori tutto quello che The Good Wife ha sempre messo in scena: una storia di persone ordinarie che vivono situazioni ordinarie e si comportano come esseri umani. Nemmeno la morte riesce a fermare la vita (Will Gardner, sto parlando di te), come può un finale di serie mettere fine alle vicende di Alicia Florrick?

Series Update #3

Since I am a big fan of tv series - and you know it, don't you? - and I've mentioned this sometimes in my blog, I decided to dedicate a new column about my tv series.

Today I'm gonna talk about three new series I began in the last few months. You can be sure I won't put any spoiler in my description, so keep on reading!
You should know that I will talk about old series too, because there's so many masterpieces to see and you can discover them even years after the pilot.

The Astronaut Wives Club
Based on Lily Koppel's book, The Astronaut Wives Club tells about the lives of astronauts' wives in the '60s, with their secrets, worries and fears. The plot is all about them and their feelings during their husband's travels in space. What I like the most about Astronaut Wives Club is the absolute credibility of the characters. They are so true that you'll end with identify with one or more of them.
The book is still unreleased in Italy but I'd like to read it in english. Maybe it could be a good way to train!
Only three episodes were released so far, so you should catch up with it.

Wayward Pines
Based on Blake Crouch's book, it's all about a strange little town called Wayward Pines. The protagonist, Ethan Burke, is a secret service agent, and he arrives there after a totally odd accident: it doesn't take too long to understand that Wayward Pines is not like all the other cities in the world.
I think this show can be described as a mix of Under the Dome and The Stepford Wives. It's not the most beautiful tv series I've ever seen, but it's definitely a good thriller/sci-fi show, so if you like the genre, you probably will like it.

The Good Wife
I didn't know this one until some of my twitter following started to talk about it. They were so excited that I decide to give The Good Wife a chance. I must confess, I'm totally in love with it. I usually don't like legal drama, because I don't like law at all - I don't understand anything. But. This tv series is the best one I saw in a long time - since I watched Breaking Bad, I guess. It's quite old, it began in 2009 so there are 6 seasons to watch, but if you like it, you won't realize that there's so much to watch. I love Alicia Florrick, I want to be like her, she's like perfect to me: from the way she wears her suite, to her mother's sensibility. I must confess I totally identify myself with her, I almost cry in some episodes. I began to be interested in law too, so I guess I'm pretty obsessed with The Good Wife.
A must-see.

New series

I think I've already mentioned my tv series addiction, so it's absolutely necessary to me talking about two new series which began on February.

The Casual Vacancy

Based on the novel by J.K. Rowling, The Casual Vacancy is a british drama set in Pagford. The series talks about a lot of characters, 34 to be precise. The book (and the series of course) begins with the death of Barry Fairbrother, leaving a casual vacancy in the parish council.
What I liked the most about the book was the attention paid to all the characters. They were a lot, so it must have been very difficult to paint them so precisely one by one, but Rowling absolutely succeeded. For this reason I think that the miniseries was the best choice: a movie would have been too short to show the complexity of the characters, and a series too long for a 500 pages book.
The pilot was really good, while the second episode wasn't so good as the first, it seems to me to be quite slow and without action, but I think that the series will be about the characters more than the story, just as the book is.


Better Call Saul

If you didn't watch Breaking Bad, you probably won't watch this, even if producers says that BCS is a independent series (I'm not so sure about it).
The series is about the life of James McGill aka Saul Goodman, the criminal lawyer who helped Walt and Jesse with their plans and misdeeds. Better Call Saul is set before Breaking Bad, so we learn more about Saul's rise to power. We also see Mike and Tuco, two central characters in BrBa.
The first four episodes were really good in my opinion, I liked them so much, but I noticed that I haven't understood yet where we're going with the plot. I know, just as everybody who watched BrBa know, what James McGill will become, but that cannot be clear for people who didn't watch BrBa, and that's why I cannot understand why producers claim it to be an independent series.
So my suggestion is to watch BrBa before BCS. I promise you won't regret it.

Keep calm and...

I apologize for having forgotten the blog for two weeks, but I had a very bad period and even if I do have a lot of ideas, I have no time to write here.
Last days were really hard, I also went to the hospital because of a chest pain. I was very worried but everything seems to be fine and I was told I am just stressed.
So the question was: what should I do to fight stress?

It's not as easy as it can seem, especially for a psychology student like me because I often find myself thinking about what my unconscious hides and so on.
Well, I also know that thinking too much about that is wrong so I tried to do something very relaxing and forget about University for a while.

Basically this is what I did during the last week.

I read

Books, things on the internet or magazines. It doesn't really matter what, of course I avoided news because they often scare me. It is a good activity if you need not to think about your issues. I'm currently reading a funny book, Who is Tom Ditto? by Danny Wallace. His style reminds me of Nick Hornby's, who I adore: funny, easy and fluid. The book is about a guy who is left by the girlfriend without any explanation. He begins looking for her and he finds out that there's a group of people who literally copy other people's lives. It is not as stupid as it might seems, in fact it makes me think about how natural it is to copy people we like or appreciate.

I had a lot of baths
I like having baths sometimes but I don't have them very often. I bought Lush's bath stuff and I fill my tub with warm water and a lot of fluffy foam and.. done! Twenty minutes only for myself with hot water and a good smell is everything I need to calm down.
Plus, there are sales on a lot of bath products. I tried a bath bomb some months ago but I didn't really like it because there were no foam. I tried again with a bubble bar and it was exactly what I was looking for; it makes so much bubbles that I have to divide the bar. Defintely one of my favourite products ever! 

I walked
I think I am the laziest person ever lived on Earth, I usually take the bus if I have to go somewhere, but walking is something I need to do when I want to stay alone with my thoughts. This week I took the bus just twice when I felt tired. Of course the weather was quite warm and sunny or I don't think I would have walked so much.

I watched Baby Daddy
I am a big fan of TV series as you might have gathered from my last post, but I prefer drama to comedy by far. I haven't watched Baby Daddy since the second season was broadcast so I am actually watching the episodes I missed. Baby Daddy is the comedy I prefer because it makes me laugh a lot: it's crazy, non-sense and really stupid. Not every comedies I've seen are so funny, and if a comedy doesn't make me laugh, why should I watch it?

This is what I did to fight stress, but you could give me some advice, I would appreciate it.

The 5 best tv series of 2014

Tomorrow I'll leave and go to Milan, where I'll stay with my boyfriend for a few days. So this will be the last post for this year and I wanted to do my personal top 5 tv series of 2014.
I haven't talked about tv series so far, but I really love them. It's such an addiction which get worse and worse, especially during the school term - and trust me if I say that it is a serious problem.
This year I saw a lot of tv series, old and new, but I wanted to talk about the five ones that totally stole my heart. Be calm, I hate spoilers so I won't spoil you anything.
Here we go!


5. How to get away with murder
It began on September 2014 so it's totally a new tv series - only nine episodes was broadcast so far. I'm a newbie about Shonda Rhimes' tv series, but it is a very good product and HTGAWM deserve a place in my top 5. Every episode has a story itself but it also follows a central plot, some actors are really good, my favorite ones are Viola Davis, Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls' Paris Geller, who played a hard worker also in this tv series) and Alfred Enoch (yes, Dean Thomas is grown up guys!). It can easily become one of the best new tv series if it keeps up the good work.

4. Gomorra la serie
When I began to be interested in tv series, I didn't expect to find an italian one which could compete with the american ones. But Gomorra la serie was a wonderful surprise! Created by Roberto Saviano, Gomorra la serie is about Camorra, and when I say it, I mean it is about Camorra, not about fighting it. It's fascinating but also terrifying, one of the most intense series I've ever seen. It gave me the creeps more than once and I don't feel ashamed to tell. Everything that happens has a meaning and is thought with extremely precision, there is an important evolution of the characters, especially Gennaro Savastano. The dialogues are in napoletano, the dialect of Napoli, and it was very hard for me to understand them (I read substitles), but it makes the entire series more credible and faithful to the reality.

3. Person of Interest
I could write about Person of Interest for years, not only because I've seen it twice, but also because I studied it for the exam of sociology - and it was one of my best work ever.
Person of interest is a science fiction crime drama, but I think that the reality of PoI is not so far from ours. Actually, it can be considered a farsighted story - and I'm referring to PRISM and all the cases about global control we hear everyday. It's very credible and it is terrifying because we actually are controlled by machines more than we think. Season three has been amazing, I loved the fact that it was full of references to sociologists and philosophers such as Foucault and his concept of biopower: these things made Person of Interest more interesting and less banal than you can think. I also love Micheal Emerson, he's one of the best actor I know, I loved him in Lost and I adore him playing Harold Finch.

2. Fargo
Coen brothers' movie becomes a mini tv series. Well, I've never seen Fargo the movie but I guarantee that the tv series is wonderful. At the beginning I didn't understand a lot, I just kept watching it without being able to tell the plot, thinking that every product from Coen brothers is quite weird, and after a few episodes I realized that... I liked it! Lorne Malvo is one of the scariest characters ever seen in a tv series but also one of the greatest and I think that Billy Bob Thornton is the best actor in the whole series. And shall we talk about Lester Nygaard? I study psychology so one of the thing I look at the most is the psychological evolution of the characters and Lester Nygaard slowly becomes a total different person; it's absolutely shocking how he changes.
As I tweeted when I finished the tv series, if you're glued to the television during the credits of the last episode, the series is a success. And for me it was totally a success as I didn't want to click on the red X when the last episode finished.

1. Breaking Bad
I do know that Breaking Bad wasn't broadcast on 2014, but I hadn't seen it before of last August, so I had to include it in my top 5.
Breaking Bad is simply perfect. I loved the plot, I loved the characters (I fell in love with Jesse Pinkman, but who doesn't?), I loved the dialogues, I loved magnets, I loved everything about it, but what makes BrBa the best tv series I've ever seen is the fact that it has a beginning and it has an end. I admire the authors so much because they never took advantage by the audience and the global success of their product stringing the series out: they remained faithful to their original idea. And this is not as common as you might think!
Walter White, Jesse Pinkman and Hank Schrader are three of the best characters of all time, starting from the actors until their story and of course the evolution. I was pretty shocked when I see that Walter White actually broke bad, but then I realized that he had to, or the series would have been a failure. And this is admirable because Vince Gilligan wanted to tell a story about a man who suddenly became bad, and he did, without wasting time telling things useless for the series. He could have done it and could have earned more money but he didn't, he didn't ruin his product and decided to make a spin-off and leaving Breaking Bad exactly as he created it.

I become soooo boring when I talk about Breaking Bad so I'll stop immediately.
